I'm not dead yet

I like to think I take pretty good care of myself. I try to eat well and I exercise pretty much everyday. I love to run and walk and even the occasional treadmill or elliptical workout. However, I do hate to do weight work. It is the first thing to go in my weekly routine.

Because of all of this I do feel pretty good most of the time. But of course there are always those weeks of being too busy, too tired, too whatever and I wonder why the heck I make the effort. While the truth is I miss the exercise when it does not fit into my schedule. I also can instantly tell when my diet goes awry. But, today I received the best confirmation of all, I am apparently very healthy.

My company sponsored a health screening for all interested employees. I assumed the majority of my 900 fellow employees would be interested, but I was wrong. Anyway, there were a variety of test and I attempted to get to them all. I love things that are measured, especially when I measure up.

I kicked most of the test's butts! Excellent all the way around. The nurse that did my skin scan even said I had "great skin, especially for 41 years old."

The coolest test was the body composition test. This instrument was applied to my bicep area. It estimated my percentage body fat, BMI, BMR, and percentage water. I will not go into the weight of my fat, but if I had no fat I would weigh 107 lbs. I am also 54.3% water. The goal is 55-60% water, but the nurses indicated that my score was higher than normal. I guess I would get graded on the curve and maintain that A average. Given that I drink at least a gallon of water per day, it is probably my recreational drinking that is the problem.

My worse performance was on the bone density test. They measured the density of my hand bones. While in the normal range, I am a little on the low side. The recommendation - weight work. Really? Someone set me up, right? I even explained to the nurse that I did not like to do weight work. She smiled and said I should buy some five pound weights at Target. While not motivated, at least I have a reason to pump some iron.

I've heard jumping builds bone mass. You should buy a big trampoline instead of little weights beacuse that would be more fun for all of us.

Nurse said that given that I run, my bone mass issues are probably only in my upper body. I would need to jump on my hands.

I'll be sure to have a camera on hand.
